Foundation Apprenticeship (1 Year): Construction (Level 5)

This Foundation Apprenticeship gives pupils an introduction to the skills that will help them move into a career in construction.

This course is aimed at pupils who can work at SCQF level 5 and are interested in working in the construction industry.

It will allow pupils to gain or develop existing skills and knowledge in a range of construction fields, giving them the experience they need to make an informed choice for future studies or when considering Modern Apprenticeships.

The course therefore involves a number of short units that allow pupils to try out and develop their skills across a range of trades. 

By completing this course, you will be developing important skills to prepare you for undertaking additional training and qualifications when you leave school, or for entering suitable employment via a Modern Apprenticeship programme.

What you will experience

Teaching will take the form of practical, hands-on activities in a workshop environment, combined with classroom-based theory lessons. NPA Level 5 units are delivered, including:

  • Work-based skills: Construction 
  • One brick walling: an introduction 
  • Develop Bench Joinery Skills 
  • Decorative Painting 
  • Work-based skills challenge

Throughout the course you will also gain many skills that are highly sought after by employers, including: 

  • An interest in the Construction industry 
  • Good time-keeping skills 
  • A willingness and commitment to learning 
  • A knowledge of appropriate dress, in particular Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) 
  • Planning and preparation skills 
  • An ability to establish/maintain good working relationships with others
  • Problem-solving skills

To achieve the full qualification, you must attend regularly and successfully complete all units. Assessment will be based on a range of practical activities in real or simulated workplace settings. Assessors will observe as you carry out tasks, and you will also complete a self-review and a folio.
