Careers at Aberdeen City Council

24 November 2021

Darren people and organisational development adviser
Hi! My name is Darren and I am a People and Organisational Development Advisor in Aberdeen City Council’s Talent Team. My role is varied as I advise and support managers across all of our service areas with finding, recruiting and selecting the right people, for the right jobs, at the right time. You might spot me at recruitment days or fairs or might see me delivering workshops on application and interview tips online, at fairs, schools or other educational establishments. My role also involves me looking at how we support and facilitate people to move and progress in their careers at Aberdeen City Council.

A key part of my role includes equality, diversity and inclusion and how we ensure that our organisation is representative of the people we serve, embraces diversity and provides an inclusive environment where everyone can flourish. This includes working closely with the AbzWorks team in developing our young workforce and investing in our young people.

Aberdeen City Council is a great organisation to join as a young person (or a person of any age!). We have an amazing range of roles available across so many different service areas. As a large organisation, we have all of the usual corporate and business functions that you would imagine. As a local authority, we also have some really unique opportunities that are available (many that I’d never heard of or thought about before I joined in 2014!). A lot of our service areas offer entry-level positions but we also have a growing number of apprenticeship opportunities too (alongside many professional, graduate and leadership opportunities). With a focus on developing our internal workforce, we can provide opportunities for moving upwards and across the organisation for anyone wanting to grow and expand their career experiences. As well as a large learning and development offering, you can also get involved in corporate projects, programmes, networks and working groups – such as our Equality Ambassadors Network, Digital Champions or Young Employee Network.

All of our roles are advertised on the my job Scotland website and we also promote many of our opportunities and recruitment updates on social media:

You can also find lots of information about working for us and our equality, diversity and inclusion programmes on our website. This also includes some handy tips for applications and interviews with us.
