Energy

Energy sector

Have you considered an energy career? The world is changing. Energy is at the heart of it. There is arguably no other industry where your work will be so important to the future of the planet.

The energy sector is at the forefront of the shift to net zero. We will still need oil and gas but there will be cleaner energy sources making up more of the mix, including wind, hydrogen and carbon capture, usage and storage (CCUS).

About 37,000 people are employed in the energy sector in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire. Although there will still be future demand for traditional oil and gas jobs, we know that by 2025, 4500 new energy jobs will be available in roles that don’t even exist today.

Find out more about the Energy Future

Hydrogen will play a key role in Aberdeen’s energy transition.

Transport is the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions in Scotland. It is also the main cause of air pollution in cities. Air pollution has a negative impact on the health of citizens, animals, and the planet.
Aberdeen City Council is committed to reducing carbon emissions and recently approved a Net Zero Vision to become a climate positive city. The Council has been recognised for its achievements so far in hydrogen technology including a range of awards and world-firsts – this includes one of the largest and most varied fleets of hydrogen vehicles in Europe.

Since 2014 Aberdeen has had over 70 hydrogen vehicles on the road – these include buses, vans, road sweepers and waste trucks. Aberdeen took part in the largest hydrogen bus trial between 2014-2019, operating 10 fuel cell buses. In 2019, Aberdeen deployed the world’s first 15 hydrogen double-decker buses. An additional 10 buses are expected in 2022. The UK’s first fuel cell waste truck and 6 electric hydrogen bikes are also expected to be operating in the City by 2022.

You can find out more about Aberdeen City Council’s plan to work with partners to develop a hydrogen hub that will create thousands of future jobs.
