Ilhem’s life-changing route to employment with ABZWorks

3 October 2025

My name is Ilhem, and I want to share my journey with ABZWorks and how the service has changed my life.

I first heard about ABZWorks through Aberdeen Foyer. At the time, I had a background as a data specialist, but finding the right kind of opportunities was difficult as the roles available didn’t match my skills or long-term goals, and after a period of unemployment, I began to lose confidence in myself.

When I joined ABZWorks, I was introduced to my Employability Keyworker, Laura, who listened to me, believed in me, and encouraged me. After a discussion about my interests she suggested I try a Digital Media course with SHMU, where I could explore my interest in photography and media. My work was displayed on SHMU’s social media pages, and this was the beginning of something new for me.

Building Skills and Volunteering

Building on these new skills I also volunteered with Instant Neighbour as a Photography Assistant for their online shop and as an admin, being awarded the title of Volunteer of the Month in July. These experiences allowed me to grow professionally, adapt to new responsibilities, and gain valuable insight into areas beyond my core abilities.

From there I continued my journey, I joined the Grow Save Multiply Project, which gave me a chance to try new things like yoga and cooking at CFine. These activities may sound small, but for me they were powerful. They helped me connect with others, build confidence, and understand that wellbeing and employment go hand in hand. This programme also introduced me to a number of services available to me in the city that I had not heard of before. One of these organisations were Grampian Credit Union who delivered a talk to our group highlighting what they do and a volunteering opportunity. I was inspired and encouraged to get in touch.

Grampian Credit Union

My first task at Grampian Credit Union was to organise and support the delivery of free financial literacy workshops for local communities across Aberdeenshire. These sessions cover topics such as budgeting, saving, and responsible borrowing, helping participants build confidence in managing their finances. I was involved in planning the workshops, coordinating logistics, supporting the sessions both in person and online, and assisting participants with follow-up one-to-one financial reviews.

In addition, I have been able to apply the digital media skills I developed during the SHMU course to produce promotional materials for the organisation. This includes creating content for social media, print, and other channels to support the marketing and outreach of events and campaigns, which I have greatly enjoyed. Overall, my role combines practical community engagement with marketing support to promote the organisation effectively.

Getting Involved in Project Design

While volunteering with Grampian Credit Union I took part in the co-design project for young parents with ABZWorks and Rocket Science where I felt that my voice mattered. My views were listened to and respected, and I felt proud to contribute to something that could make a difference for others.

Into Employment

Following four months of volunteering I am now employed at Grampian Credit Union where I help to organise and deliver financial literacy workshops in the community. I also create promotional materials, using the digital media skills I learned earlier in my journey. What I enjoy most about my role is the opportunity for interaction with people. I have been able to establish connections with both internal colleagues and external professionals, gaining valuable knowledge and insights from their experience and expertise. This engagement has also helped me begin building my professional network, which I see as an important step in my ongoing career development.

Each team member has contributed to my learning by sharing their experience and offering guidance, which has been invaluable in supporting my tasks. I have worked particularly closely with Chinyere Adeniyi- Alade, our CEO, and under her management, she gave me the opportunity to join the team and be part of the organisation’s business journey. This experience has allowed me to develop both practical skills, and a deeper understanding of how a business operates.

Having this role has made me feel re-integrated into the job industry and genuinely valued, especially after a period of long-term unemployment. Returning to a structured work environment and being able to contribute behind a desk was an unprecedented and rewarding experience. It has boosted my confidence, reminded me of my professional capabilities, and motivated me to continue developing my skills and career.

This work experience has shown me how I can make a real difference by sharing my skills and supporting others, even in small ways. For my family, it has been wonderful for my children to see me returning home full of energy and pride, sharing positive experiences from my work. It has also brought more stability and confidence to our home life, and being able to contribute in this way has been incredibly rewarding both personally and professionally.

The Future for Ilhem

Looking ahead, I want to continue learning and growing. I hope to develop further with Grampian Credit Union, explore self-employment through my passion for photography, and one day step into a management role.

ABZWorks has given me more than opportunities, it has given me confidence, purpose, and belief in my future. That’s why I would recommend the service to anyone.
